UK, Canada Prime Ministers Hold Talks on Ties

(MENAFN) Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney held talks Monday with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, focusing on deepening economic and security cooperation between the two nations as Ottawa works to strengthen global alliances in the face of deteriorating relations with Washington.

"Today, the Prime Minister, Mark Carney, spoke with the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Sir Keir Starmer," read a statement issued by Carney's office.

Carney opened the call by thanking Starmer for his condolences over last week's deadly school shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia.

The two leaders then turned to bilateral affairs. "The prime ministers discussed the growing economic and security partnerships between Canada and the UK, including intensified collaboration on trade," the statement said, highlighting advances in digital trade, critical minerals, and sovereign AI infrastructure through the Canada-UK Economic and Trade Working Group.

Talks also touched on ongoing negotiations between the European Union and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) bloc.

A centerpiece of the discussion was the proposed Defense, Security and Resilience Bank (DSR Bank). Carney stressed "the DSR Bank's potential to unlock private capital to fund defense and security firms across the supply chain – creating massive opportunities for workers and businesses." Both leaders subsequently agreed to coordinate their teams toward that goal. "The prime ministers agreed to task their teams to work together to advance this objective and ensure alignment of Canadian and UK efforts," the statement added.

The call underscores Ottawa's push to diversify its international partnerships as ties with the United States grow increasingly fraught. Relations between the two neighbors have soured since President Donald Trump levied tariffs on Canadian goods and abruptly suspended trade negotiations — a move triggered by a Canadian anti-tariff advertisement broadcast in the US.

Carney and Starmer agreed to maintain close and regular contact going forward.
