Canada Rejects Ties with Iran Without Regime Change

(MENAFN) Anita Anand, Canada’s foreign affairs minister, declared on Saturday that Canada will not reestablish diplomatic relations with Iran or reopen its embassy in Tehran “unless there is regime change. Period.”

In remarks given to media outlets during an interview in Germany, where she is participating in the Munich Security Conference, Anand emphasized that “The repressive Iranian regime must curtail the consistent and illegal violation of Iranian human rights, including by respecting international law and international humanitarian law.”

The minister further revealed that Ottawa has enacted fresh sanctions against seven individuals who are “linked to Iranian state bodies responsible for intimidation, violence and transnational repression targeting Iranian dissidents and human rights defenders.” These new punitive measures are part of Canada’s broader effort to hold accountable those allegedly involved in suppressing civil liberties.

Diplomatic relations between Canada and Iran were cut off in 2012 under former Prime Minister Stephen Harper due to concerns over human rights. Since that time, Canada has maintained economic sanctions and trade restrictions, while also seeking international legal recourse following the destruction of a commercial aircraft carrying Canadian passengers.

At the same time, the United States has reinforced its military footprint in the Middle East, dispatching a second aircraft carrier along with additional destroyers, fighter planes, and reconnaissance aircraft to the region.

Anand indicated that Canada’s primary attention in the area remains centered on confronting human rights abuses. However, she refrained from clarifying whether Ottawa would back a potential US military offensive.
