Canada abandons plan to send armored personnel carriers to Ukraine

(MENAFN) Canada has officially confirmed that its plan to refurbish and send decommissioned armored personnel carriers to Ukraine has been scrapped, ending months of speculation about the status of the unfulfilled commitment.

The initiative, valued at approximately 250 million Canadian dollars (about US$178 million), involved 25 vehicles that had been transferred nearly two years ago to Ontario-based defense contractor Armatec Survivability for refurbishment.

“There is a decision that’s been taken to nullify the contract with that company presently,” McGuinty told the House of Commons defense committee on Tuesday. “I can’t go any further in terms of discussing the merits. We’ll see how that evolves in relation to the department and the contractor.”

The admission came after reports noted that the project had quietly vanished from the government’s public list of active defense contracts earlier in the year. Sources familiar with the matter described the refurbishment program as “dead.”

While McGuinty did not provide specific reasons for the project’s termination, he highlighted Canada’s continued military assistance to Ukraine in other forms, stressing Ottawa’s broader efforts to support Kyiv in its conflict with Russia.

Ethnic Ukrainians, including descendants of nationalist groups that fled to Canada after World War II, remain a politically influential constituency in the country — a factor that has long shaped Canada’s stance toward Ukraine.
